Canopy Walk
Suspended within the rainforest at Ngaga Lodge, the Canopy Walk invites you to experience the Congo Basin from a perspective few ever reach. Elevated above the forest floor and woven between mature trees, this gentle guided experience opens a living layer of the rainforest that has until now remained just out of reach.
After a morning tracking western lowland gorillas through dense forest paths and marantaceae, guests can return to the trees in an entirely different way. From the middle canopy, the forest shifts in texture, sound, and movement: light filters through the leaves, birds call through the branches, insects stir in the green, and arboreal life may reveal itself from a new angle. It is a chance to slow down, look closely, and view the forest from a primate’s perspective.
The Canopy Walk extends over 70 metres of suspended walkway, with seven elevated viewing platforms encircling mature tree trunks between approximately 9 and 13 metres above the forest floor. Designed to immerse guests in the forest without separating them from it, the experience is quiet, sensory, and deeply connected to place.
As night falls, the forest changes again. Guided Nocturnal Canopy Walks offer the rare opportunity to explore Ngaga after dark from an elevated vantage point, listening for the calls, rustles, and movements of the nocturnal species that bring the forest to life after sunset.
Whether experienced in the soft light of afternoon or under the cover of darkness, the Canopy Walk adds a new dimension to time at Ngaga Lodge — another way to understand the rainforest not only as a place to pass through, but as a world layered with life above, around, and below you.
